Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur (Great White Lake), Mongolia

Following Joe’s contact, We got in touch with an English teacher named Tunga.  She helped me to arrange a car to her house in Tariat, the nearest town to the Great White Lake.  From there, Tunga put me in her only guest ger tent out on the lake with a French couple.  The three of us had a beautiful horse trek to the famous dead volcano the next day.

I’m glad that I had a one day horse trek before committing myself into a long, multiple-day one.  Though Mongolia in known as a country of horses, the saddles on Mongolian horses are quite thin and small.  They do not provide much cushioning between you and the horse.  Needless to say after a day of horse ride, my butt hurts so bad that I could hardly walk.  Unless I’m bring my own saddle from Texas, I’m definitely not considering long treks on horses now.
